What is
the Monsanto Fund Matching Gifts Program?
The
matching gifts program gives permanent Monsanto employees and active members
of the Monsanto Board of Directors an opportunity to join Monsanto
Fund’s support of not-for-profit institutions.
An eligible participant may request a
contribution to match his/her donation to a qualifying
non-profit located in the US.
Generally, if the recipient organization adheres to the
guidelines
of the Matching Gifts Program, the request will be
honored.
Monsanto Fund reserves the right to interpret and administer
the program, and may suspend, amend or discontinue the program at any
time.
Changes
may affect multi-year pledges entered into before the changes were
made.
Therefore, participants
should not rely on the program to help fulfill their obligations
under multi-year pledges

What
qualifies an organization as a 501(c)(3) or a 170(c)(1)?
Organizations
must be recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as
tax-exempt, nonprofit, public charities under section
501(c)(3) or as a “unit of government” under Section 170(c)(1)
to receive matching funds. A
501(c)(3) is a section of the Federal Tax Code, which establishes
the criteria for tax-exempt charitable organizations.
Section 170(c)(1) refers to agencies that conduct activities
to benefit the public at large, like public schools, state
universities, public libraries and volunteer fire departments. There
are exceptions to this, referred to in our Guidelines (e.g.
private foundations with a 501(c)(3) status are not eligible).
For a more detailed discussion on non-profits see Guidestar.

Can
I find out if an organization is eligible before I make a gift?
Yes,
contact the Matching Gift Center at monsanto@matchgift.com or by
phone at 1-800-628-2494.
If
you are going to make a charitable gift regardless of organization
eligibility, please register your gift. If
your organization is found in the database you can view details to
learn its current eligibility status.
If your organization is new to the database or if its
eligibility has not been determined, the Matching Gift Center will
request information on its tax exempt status and mission statement
before processing your gift. If
the organization is not eligible under the program we will notify
you.

My spouse
and I both work for Monsanto. Who should make the donation?
Eligibility is determined based on
the receiving organization's records. When making the gift one
of you must be designated as the donor. If the organization's
records show your spouse as the donor, your spouse should register
the gift so the gift can be appropriately verified.

Are
gifts from fundraising events such as walk-a-thons
eligible?
As long as the
organization is an eligible recipient,
you may register your personal donation just as for any
charitable contribution. Eligible
Monsanto participants who make donations to support your
participation may register their own donations after the gift has
been sent to the organization.
These must be the personal funds of the eligible Monsanto
participant only and cannot come from funds provided by other
individuals or groups, as pooled funds.
